ABDN DOCS – $2500 Aberdeen Area Short Documentary Competition

ABDN DOCS is an Aberdeen, SD area short documentary competition. 

The Aberdeen region has centuries of great stories yet to be told.  It is time to bring the wonders of this area to the big screen.

The South Dakota Film Festival has partnered with the Aberdeen Convention & Visitor’s Bureau and the Aberdeen American News to create this new competition.

The documentaries must feature the stories from the 50 mile radius of Aberdeen, SD.  The topic of the documentary is the filmmaker’s choice and may include but is not limited to; people, architecture, culture, art, sports, events, business, festivals, ancestry, environment, food and heritage.   

A guaranteed payout of $2500 will be awarded to the Best of Competition film. Cash prizes and other awards to the top films are based on a combination of people’s choice voting and a select jury of film experts and sponsors.

The top films will be selected for presentation at the South Dakota Film Festival September 20-23rd when the winning film will be crowned.

Submissions are open through June 30th 5:00 pm
Online screening and public voting will begin on July 9th 10:00 am at
Public voting concludes July 25th 5:00 pm.


Films must be 3-10 minutes long.
Films must be accompanied by a 10-30 second trailer / teaser promoting your competition film.
Films resolution max of 1080p minimum of 720p
Aspect ratio of 16:9
Maximum bit rate of 20 MB/s
